European Week of Sport is held in Latvia for ten years now and brings together a variety of sporting events and active leisure activities across the country. A hike is traditionally the central event. This year it took place in Ergli.
The hike organisers approached me with a request to organise a tourist adventure game in Ergli. The event was designed for the widest possible audience, so participants were offered four routes of varying lengths and difficulty.
#BeActive hike in Ergli attracted almost 5,000 participants, with 1,000 teams registering for the walking quest game.
Quest in Ergli
This treasure hunt was interesting both for visitors and local residents who wanted to get to know this historically rich town from a new perspective.
Participants had the opportunity to enrich their route with an educational interactive game on their smartphones. The quest included visiting the most interesting places, fun facts about the spots and the history of the town, riddles, photo and video challenges.
The game tasks were adapted to the chosen route, varying slightly for different itineraries.
During the quest, players got to know the most significant places in the historical centre of Ergli and its surroundings:
- Former Riga–Ergli railway line
- Secret communications bunker
- Water reservoir
- Blaumanis Cemetery
- Medieval castle territory
- Rudolf Blaumanis Memorial Museum “Braki”
Implementation
A completely new game was created for this project within a tight deadline. The preparation stage included exploration of the area, review of archival data, filming of new material and adaptation of historical content, a meeting and interview with the keeper of the secret bunker, etc.
The puzzles and challenges were selected not only in accordance with the objects, but also had to ensure high passing capacity — participants had to get the necessary experience, but at the same time could not stay in one place for too long.
The IT component of the game was a big challenge and a new experience, requiring in-depth study, preparation, and the application of new skills.
On the day of the event, an information centre for the quest was set up at the start of the hike.
